Alex was built in 1909 by the Lima locomotive works in Lima, OH. He and his brother Jordan were built for the United States army Transportation Corp. He and Jordan were eventually sent down to Fort Benning near Columbus, Georgia. He worked there as means of transport for soldiers stationed there until 1921, when he was bought by the Mid Sodor where he mostly worked at the coal mine near Ffarquharr road and occasionally on light goods duties.
It was during this time that Alex, which was previously his nickname, became his official name. While there, he was repainted brown and underwent two modifications. First was when his nameplates were moved from the cab to the smokebox. Followed by receiving a pair of buffers.
When the Mountain Road section closed in 1936 Alex was sold over to the Patrick Benning colliery in the north of Sodor. In spite of the often dirty work, he was repainted in a colorful red, white, and blue livery which he keeps to this day.
