The story begins when Britt Allcroft first acquires the RWS in 1979. This effort led to Britt working with Clearwater Features in 1981 to produce test footage. However, there was still issues with finding a sponsor who would willingly afford her the creative control she sought. Producer Robert D. Cordona and Director David Mitton decided to take the initiative, and met with the founders of the newly formed Henson International Entertainment: Peter Orton and Jim Henson. When presented the footage, Henson was intrigued by what Mitton called “Live-Action Animation”; with Henson himself popularizing the term “model puppetry” which is what such production style is called nowadays. Jim was interested enough to not only fund the series, but also persuade Cordona to merge Clearwater Features into HiT Entertainment's umbrella, citing the mutual benefits that both companies would enjoy in expanding it to western broadcasting and merchandising markets. While not as large as Tidmouth to the north, the city of Knapford is also a key industrial port on the Island of Sodor. To use a Midwest America analogy, it can be described as sort of like the Milwaukee to Tidmouth’s Chicago. More importantly however, it is the Sudrian west coast’s primary connection to the mineral-rich mountains of Sodor’s interior. The line has two different termini. The passenger line runs a bit further north to Knapford Junction, over the Harbor line, to meet with the mainline, while the Harbor line runs straight to the harbor (obviously). Both lines meet at Dryaw, then proceed to run to the town of Elsbridge. At the town of Ffarquhar, the line reaches a junction with a tramway that serves the numerous quarries and mines to the north of town, whereas the main route continues east the rest of the way to Ulfstead.
